On August 8th, at 9 p.m., the Museum of Pico opens in the Galeria de Exposições Temporárias do Museu da Indústria Baleeira, in São Roque do Pico, the exhibition of João Vargas' collection of miniature boats.
It is a collection of nine miniatures, 8 sloops and a trawler, which was named after its last owner and conservator. João Alberto Nunes Vargas, born in Santo Amaro do Pico, was born on November 15th, 1940 and died on June 7th, 2018, aged 77. Throughout his life, he worked in shipbuilding and gathered, preserved and increased, with remarkable devotion, all the estate received from his grandfather, João Inácio Cândido, and his father, Ricardo Vargas. He was the heir to all of his grandfather's mystique and boats, becoming the faithful guardian of the pieces that will be on display.
This collection is made up of centuries-old pieces, which have been maintained over three generations. As a depository to this collection – the João Vargas Collection –, the Museum of Pico decided, in conjunction with its owner, Mrs. Maria Luís Vargas, to exhibit the miniature boats that tell various stories, such as the regattas in the lagoons and others from the golden period of wooden shipbuilding, in Santo Amaro do Pico.
