📍 Museu da Horta – Colégio dos Jesuítas and Casa Manuel de Arriaga
In the month when World Health Day is observed, the April edition of the (In)Visible Museum pays tribute to Dr. Alberto Goulart de Medeiros, known as the “Doctor of the Poor.”
Celebrated on April 7, World Health Day was established by the World Health Organization (WHO) to mark its foundation in 1948 and aims to promote global health and raise awareness of the main challenges affecting people's well-being.
Dr. Alberto Goulart de Medeiros (1863–1945), born in Horta on Faial Island, was an ophthalmologist, naval doctor, and politician. He graduated from the Porto Medical-Surgical School and distinguished himself in service to the Portuguese Navy, taking part in overseas missions and combating epidemics such as cholera and yellow fever.
After retiring, he returned to Horta, where he developed an intense clinical practice, becoming a central figure in local healthcare. Recognized for his dedication and humanitarian spirit, he became known as the “doctor of the poor,” providing care to the entire population and standing out particularly in times of crisis, such as during the 1918 influenza pandemic.
At the same time, he pursued a political career, serving twice as Civil Governor of the Autonomous District of Horta. His medical, social, and civic work left a profound mark on the history of public health in the Azores in the early 20th century, remaining an example of service, humanity, and commitment to the community.
In this context, from April 7 to May 3, 2026, visitors will be able to explore Museu da Horta and Casa Manuel de Arriaga, where a set of medical objects from Dr. Alberto Goulart de Medeiros’ collection will be on display, donated by his heirs in 1984.
